Potassium Carbonate (Potash) – Strong Alkaline Dyeing Auxiliary

Potassium Carbonate, commonly known as Potash, is a strong alkaline compound used in many textile dyeing and surface design processes, particularly valued as a pH modifier (increaser) and dyeing auxiliary. It can often be used in place of Soda Ash, although Potash is stronger and quicker acting. Used mainly for Reactive Dyes and Natural Dyeing of cellulose fibres (cotton, linen, rayon).

Potash is widely used by textile artists, dyers, and surface designers who need a reliable alkali to assist dye uptake and colour development on cellulose fibres such as cotton, linen, hemp, and rayon.

By raising the pH of the dye bath, Potassium Carbonate helps activate certain dyes and improves the bonding process between dye and fibre. This can lead to clearer colour development and improved dye fixation.

Potash may also be used in various studio processes where a strong but manageable alkali is required.

Important:
Potassium Carbonate (Potash) is not the same as Potash Alum (Potassium Aluminium Sulphate) and should not be used as a mordant in place of alum.
