Weld (Plant Material)

Weld (Reseda luteola) is one of the oldest and most celebrated natural yellow dyes, prized for its pure, luminous golden tones. When properly mordanted, it yields bright, lightfast yellows that rival even synthetic hues for clarity and brightness. Sourced from the dried flowering tops of the weld plant, this dye gives stunning results on both protein and cellulose fibres. Weld’s clean hue makes it an ideal companion for blending with indigo to achieve lively greens or layering with madder for orange and warm golds.

Benefits

Weld is the definitive yellow in traditional natural dyeing. It provides reliable results and exceptional brilliance that doesn’t fade over time. For sustainable textile studios or artisan dyers, it’s an essential foundational colour. The soft floral scent and easy extraction process make it as pleasant to use as it is effective.

Ideal Applications

  • Hand-dyed wool, silk, and cotton fabrics.
  • Layering with indigo for bright greens.
  • Eco-printing, resist work, or heritage textile reproduction.
