Symplocos is a plant which absorbs and stores Aluminium from the soil in its leaves making it a totally organic source of Alum for mordanting natural dyes. By replacing Aluminium Sulphate with ground Symplocos leaves in your dyeing recipes - you are replacing it with a purely plant based mordant. 

Use at 50-100% WOF and re-use the mordant bath.

DIRECTIONS
-Weigh the Symplocos and add plenty of water (at least 50% WOF is needed).

-Boil it for at least 30 minutes until the symplocos sinks to the bottom of the pot.
-If you are dyeing yarns: filter the mordant water to avoid the grit getting stuck in your yarn.
-If dyeing fabric, it can be washed out easily in cold water prior to dyeing so doesn’t require filtering at this stage.        
-Cool the liquid to 40ºC (104ºF).·        
-Put the wet wool yarn or fabric into the liquid.
-Heat very gently and gradually for an hour, to the simmering point, 95ºC (200ºF).
-Rinse the wool in warm water. Be careful not to shock the wool with cold water, or it will felt.
-When rinsed, your fibre will be a pale shade of yellow. This yellow colour tells you that the fibre has been successfully mordanted by the symplocos. The yellow will disappear after dyeing and will not influence the final colour.        
-Your fibre/fabric is now mordanted and ready for dyeing now or later.

When ordering online you can choose 'Click & Collect' for order collection at our premises at 2/99 Heyington Ave, Thomastown, Victoria. We will call you confirming when your order is ready to collect.

Orders can be collected 10am 4pm Monday to Friday and we would appreciate it if you could collect your order within a week.
