Eri “Ahimsa” Peace Silk – Handwoven Natural White 114cm Wide (85gsm)

Eri “Ahimsa” Peace Silk – Handwoven Natural White 114cm Wide (85gsm)

This beautiful handwoven Eri silk, also known as Ahimsa or Peace Silk, is a soft, naturally white fabric with a gently textured finish. Woven at approximately 114cm wide and around 12 momme / 85gsm, it drapes softly with a gentle lustre and breathable structure, making it ideal for garment-making, textile art, and eco-conscious dyeing.

Unlike traditional silk production, Eri silk is harvested without harming the silkworm. The silk is spun only after the moth has emerged naturally from its cocoon – hence the name “Ahimsa”, meaning “non-violence”. This compassionate process makes Eri silk a popular choice for ethical fashion and sustainable textile practices.

The silk is produced from the caterpillar of Samia cynthia ricini, a species that feeds on castor plants – from which the Assamese name “Eri” (from era, meaning castor) is derived. Predominantly produced in Northeast India, Eri silk is prized for its warmth, breathability, and unique matte finish, with a texture similar to wool or cotton but with the softness of silk.

This natural white base dyes beautifully with natural dyes, indigo, Procion MX, or botanical dye methods, offering excellent colour depth while preserving the integrity of the fibre.

Available by the metre, 10-metre, or 20-metre lengths, with all orders cut in one continuous piece when multiple metres are ordered.
