Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel Double Drive

Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel Double Drive

Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel Double Drive

The Ashford Traditional Spinning Wheel in the Double Drive configuration is a long-standing classic, refined over decades, now offered in a robust beech wood frame with precision bearings. With a large 56 cm (22″) drive wheel and comfortable treadle action, this model is built for spinners who demand smooth operation, fine yarn capability and long service life.
In double-drive mode the drive band runs from the drive wheel to the flyer whorl and around the bobbin whorl, providing fine control of twist and take-up—excellent for fine yarns, exotic fibres or precision spinning.
Ideal for serious hand-spinners, small business fibre producers or craft studios, this wheel combines heritage design with modern build quality. Its ease of conversion, quality components and reliable performance make it an investment-grade tool.

Benefits

  • Exceptional yarn control via double drive system—ideal for fine counts and precision spinning.

  • Long-tested design (“world’s most popular spinning wheel for 90 years”).

  • Durable hardwood construction, ball-bearing components and quality finishes.

  • Versatile enough to switch between double drive and Scotch tension as fibre or technique changes.

  • Suitable for advanced spinners, design studios or small-business yarn production.

Ideal Applications:

  • Spinning fine wool, silk blends, linen, alpaca and other delicate fibres needing fine twist.

  • Producing tartan or two-ply yarns where control over twist and take-up matters.

  • Craft studios producing hand-spun yarn for retail or wholesale.

  • Advanced spinning classes or guilds teaching fine-count spinning techniques.

  • Maker-business operations where reliability, repeatability and quality output matter.

  • 56 cm (22″) drive wheel diameter ensures steady momentum and smoother treadling.
  • Double-drive ratio: approx. 7.5:1, 9.5:1, 13:1 (16:1 bobbin lead) for fine-count or precision yarns.
  • Standard orifice ~10 mm (⅜″) with orifice height approx. 69 cm (27¼″) from floor.
  • Bobbin capacity ~100 g (3-4 oz) standard bobbins.
  • Equipped with Scotch tension brake system and accepts optional accessories (jumbo flyers, double treadle kit etc).

Usage instructions:

Ensure treadle set-up is stable, maintain even treadling rhythm, thread flyer and bobbin correctly, adjust tension gradually and practice consistent hand-drafting for best results.

  • Confirm your floor space and treadle clearance—wheel diameter and height matter for ergonomic use.
  • Pre-oil bearings and check drive band tension before first use.
  • Choose bobbins and flyer size to match your desired yarn count—jumbo flyers available if needed.
  • Maintain consistent treadle rhythm for best evenness; if spinning fine counts, practise smooth drafting.
  • After spinning, finish yarn (wash, set twist) and store wheel in dry environment to preserve wood and mechanics.
