Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom 40cm / 16"

The Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom with a weaving width of approximately 40 cm (16”) is an excellent choice for makers ready to enter the world of weaving or sample their designs before scaling up. Crafted from solid Silver Beech hardwood, it features a built-in second-heddle option, allowing users to explore layered or double cloth techniques and structural variation.
Portability and ease of use are built into the design: the loom is lightweight, quick to warp, and supports a wide range of yarns from fine to bulky depending on reed choice.
Whether you’re weaving scarves, home-textiles, or sample panels, this model offers the combination of quality material, functional width and system expandability to support both learning and creative production.

Benefits

  • A highly versatile loom for beginners and experienced weavers alike, especially for sampling or smaller-scale production.

  • Excellent build quality ensures smooth weaving performance and durability for long-term use.

  • Expandability (second heddle, reed options) means you won’t outgrow it quickly—use it as a stepping stone.

  • Portable size makes it possible to weave in limited spaces or carry to workshops.

  • Supports a wide variety of fibre and design experimentation without committing to large floor looms.

Perfect For:

  • Scarves, shawls, narrow blankets, or woven accessories.

  • Sampling colour- and structure-runs before full production.

  • Art-textile panels and home-textile experiments.

  • Workshops or craft classes where space and portability matter.

  • Makers starting a small weaving studio with room to grow.

  • Weaving width: 40 cm (16”) — suitable for narrow fabrics, panels or samples.
  • Constructed from Silver Beech hardwood with natural finish and strong ratchet & pawl warp-advance system.
  • Includes 7.5 dent (dpi) reed; compatible with a variety of reed sizes (2.5, 5, 10, 12.5, 15 dpi) for different yarn weights.
  • Built-in second-heddle option allows supplementary weaving techniques or increased density.
  • Use by setting up warp to desired length, securing loom clamp to bench, threading heddle through reed and warping with even tension; begin weaving once shed is clear and shuttle path is smooth.
  • After weaving, finish fabric by washing (according to fibre content) and block or press flat to stabilise weave.

  • Choose reed and yarn sett based on intended fabric density and drape—fine yarns need higher dpi reeds.
  • Secure loom firmly to a bench via clamp to avoid wobble during weaving.
  • Check tension regularly across the warp width; wide or uneven warps can distort fabric.
  • Keep shuttle path clear and maintain even picks for consistent weave structure.
  • Finish fabrics according to fibre—wash and block before cutting or sewing for best results.
